You will need a full version of XP or higher. Now as for Vista it can be Home Premium Edition it does work better with Vista Professional, this might be surprising to hear. The Vista Ultimate does work better than Home Edition not as well as Vista Professional.
However the 32bit works more smoothly than 64bit depending on which version of Vista.
Example if using 4GB RAM for your Mac then use Vista/Win7 Pro 64bit.
Example if using 3GB or less than you an use Vista/Win7 Home Premium Edition 32bit.
If money is not an issue then go with the Pro version.
Hope this helped and if you have any more questions just ask.
btw… Get Bootcamp, Parallels, and with either Vista or Win7 you will need to turn off Indexing to help the Windows OS run much smoother, faster, and with less issues.
